So over on the SciFi BSG Forum, my friend Aquitaine44 took gdg's recent Maelstrom-induced "Ship of Lights" spec a tad further for us, by writing up a nice meaty outline of the entire BSG TOS eps called "War of the Gods, parts I and II."  I've posted her outline below.

This just completely convinces me that we are witnessing RDM's reimaging of the Beings of Light plot points from TOS.  WHICH IS GREAT NEWS!!!! Chew on that, speculators.  This has now got me wondering how Roslin, Baltar, and maybe even ROMO (yay) might fit into this arc.  Super kewl.

Also note, Aquitaine posts with me on the K/L shippers thread so, she and I have an obvious...AGENDA. Heh.

Hey shippers... thought you would be interested in the following... my sister sent me the DVDs from the old series - and last night I watched the "ship of lights" episodes to see what clues there are about TPTB be getting their inspiration (that and some fine whiskey and/or weed) for the mythology/Starbuck's return and destiny.

In these eps, called "War of the Gods, parts I and II", Apollo, Starbuck and Sheba (Commander Cain's daughter and Apollos' GF) go to a planet to investigate the fate of missing pilots. The pilots disappeared after encountering fast-moving white lights that did not appear on radar... There, amidst the wreckage of a large ship, they meet Count Iblis (Iblis apparently means devil in Isalm), a mysterious man who claims to have survived a bad fight. Iblis comes to BSG and begins to take power over the fleet by making big promises about a better life he can deliver.

Adama and Apollo seem helpless to stop him, particularly as he delivers Baltar to the fleet's custody so they can put him on trial. After figuring out Iblis is a force for destruction, Apollo, Starbuck and Sheba fight him -- but he kills Apollo. While carrying Apollo's body back to BSG, Starbuck and Sheba are overtaken by the "white lights" which carry them to their glowy white ship. There, they encounter these 5 (!) beings dressed in white who appear to be a force for good -- they revive/resurrect Apollo after Starbuck and Sheba offer to sacrifice their lives for him... Then the 5 drop them back off at BSG along with missing pilots. All three return with the coordinates to find earth...

Observations:

-- Iblis visits Baltar in jail. Baltar "knows" his voice - as that of the Cylon god (the Imperious Leader). Baltar notes that the cylons developed after advanced humans got carried away with technology many years ago.

-- Adama tells Apollo that less advanced civilizations always view more advanced ones as gods...

-- Suggestion that Iblis used to be one of the white light beings, then a war ensued...

-- 5 beings in white told Starbuck that they used to be human and that the humans might someday become like them, and then "seed" and nurture new civilizations.

-- Ships of lights - have electrical/power effect on BSG.

-- 5 beings told Starbuck that it was not Apollo's destiny to die, but that Starbuck and Apollo's continued fellowship was important to the fleet's fate...

-- Upon their return, neither Apollo or Starbuck fully remember what happened... Apollo describes feeling like he was being pulled into a "vortex" ... maelstrom (!)

My gods, I'm not the only one who didn't like 'All Along the Watchtower"? Everyone else has been raving about how great it is. Definitely ruined my enjoyment of the last 5 minutes.

LOVE that icon by the way. It's priceless. :)

Thanks!

Yeah, I loved everything about the episode, except for the stupid song. I wish they had given Ron a little more pushback on including his little idiosyncratic obsession in the series. It really has no place in the series, no matter what relationship to Earth he rationalizes it might hint at.

I'd have to agree. He does have staff for a reason.

Those are wonderful icons. Did you make them? And can I snag them? They are absolutely the most creative I've ever seen and I'm in love. :)

Nope, I didn't make them. I actually found them two different places, they were unrelated but I thought they went together nicely. Feel free to take them -- all I ask is that people not use an icon from me in a group I already use it in, to avoid confusion.

Thank you! I'll make sure not to. :)

I dunno - I kinda liked RDM's conceit that the inspiration for the Dylan song, and the inspiration for the cylon version, might both be floating up OUT THERE for anyone to grab through the ages. It is a Sci-Fi show, afterall. Those last 5 minutes kind of blew my mind. In a good way. And I wasn't a hippie in the 60s. In fact, I wasn't alive yet.

I actually did like the last few minutes - just not the song. I would have preferred something different. I guess it's just not my taste, even though it has some possible significance. I'm sure there are other songs he could have used as well that hint at all sorts of weird connections (anything by Yes for example - there's some real druggie music!).

I'm not a hippie either. Though I was alive in the 60's - born at the tail end so I didn't really listen to Hendrix in my crib. :)
