OK, well despite all the “issues” with FanLib and all the LJ/fandom debates in this area, I am very, very excited to see a few content creators who are making efforts to deal with fanart on its own terms without giving away their content for free.  As many fans know, NBC/ Universal/ SciFi set up a Battlestar videomaking contest earlier this year.  This was exciting but limited, since TPTB in this case gave fans access only to  effects shots, sound effects, and music cues to play with.  No actual episode footage other than that.

Since then, I am happy to see these newer developments:

…The creators of HEROES and NBC have posted a fanvid and fanart contest timed with Comicon. TPTB on that show went through the entire season and pulled clips for you to play with, and the show’s music composers (Wendy and Lisa formerly of Prince’s classic 80s band!) took all the themes from the score and created a single score cue to cut vids with.  So this seems to be the first show of the current season, to actually offer vidders footage to play with?  Am I right on this?  (The only catch: you cannot DL the footage and cut it in your own software, you can only do it online using their flash editor.)

…the newly renovated StarWars.com has posted a library of film clips and other media to allow fans to create their own totally legal ‘mashups,’ and are proudly posting fanvids all over the site (if they’re worth watching).  This is notable mainly because of LucasFilm's infamous issues with fanart over the years.

…CBS/Star Trek is hosting a ST:TOS fanfic contest (yes, yes, it’s on FanLib – so sue me!), with actors George Takei and Wil Wheaton hosting/moderating.

This is good news, my friends, good news.  Baby steps…

I'm staggered by the Star Wars news; for as long as I can remember, it's been a case of never letting any fanart for anything Lucas related get any attention, because if possible he'll sue the arse off you. I remember the flap last year when some woman had her (bad) Star Wars fanfic published through a small publishing house she was on the board of, and which resulted in it ending up on amazon because of their affiliations process... and everyone went head down fast, waiting for Lucas to go on the rampage and create a precedent in law for making fanfiction illegal...

Yeah I'm not a huge SW fan person but I understand this is a BIG, BIG deal for that fandom and a big shift in the LucasFilm position.

The Star Trek PTB are also stingy, and apparently have never before participated in any form of "official" fanfic.
