This post goes all over the place.
May. 17th, 2007 09:25 amSo bear with me. I’ll use a bunch of cuts for those of you who like your friends page nice and neat.
Some TV blogs seem to be leaking various bits of Bionic Katee info.
I'm also loving David Eick today for saying this: "I'm working on a show that's all about what it means to be a strong woman in contemporary America, that happens to be called THE BIONIC WOMAN." Eick, YOU. SLAY. ME. The Feminist Agenda is alive and well, and living in some TV pitches by a couple of guys in Hollywood. I'm looking at you JJ and RDM...
There is a whole mess of hullaballoo this week about FanLib, who released an official press release recently.

Apple TV…to get or not to get? I’ve been considering this, since I don’t mind connecting my TV to my Mac, and heck do I watch a lot of TV. But this guy from a trusted source (who also happens to be a major BSG fan!) has convinced me to wait. Anyone out there using it yet? Opinions? It’s really just a matter of time before all the kinks in this are worked out... *mood: IMPATIENT*
Fascinating news: Rupert Murdoch has announced that his entire media empire is GOING GREEN? Wonders never cease. *mood: HOPEFUL*

Some TV blogs seem to be leaking various bits of Bionic Katee info.
Since the TV upfronts just happened, bits of drabble are leaking out.
First we had the LA Times blogger Kate Aurthur talking about how there is apparently some head scratching going on in the TV biz about how Katee can be on both shows. This blog entry ends with Kate dropping a tiny bomb: “And a decision on the future of "Battlestar Galactica" -- whether the fourth season will wrap up the series -- will be announced in the next few weeks.”
HUH? How is that possible? I left her a comment…is she talking out of the side of her mouth or what? I don’t see how that decision can be made so soon. Although, as we know, TPTB are breaking the back 10 right now so…HMMMMM! *crosses fingers for S5*
Then we got TVWeek’s James Hibberd with an item about how Katee apparently was only supposed to be in the pilot for BW – but she knocked it out of the park (OF COURSE) and now everyone wants her to continue to appear throughout the season.
I always wonder if these sort of items are being placed by Katee’s manager or publicist. Is she trying to get more money out of Eick/NBC or something? Well Katee – good luck with that! We love you and I am psyched that she’s coming back to network TV. But I still think the decision to put BW up against the Grey’s spinoff, instead of just after HEROES, is THE DUMBEST.
In the end, it’s all good news for us Katee fans – she’ll be on two shows instead of one! Let’s hope BW makes it through the fall unscathed and keeps going.
Oh and OT but cool: E!Online’s Kristin says that HEROES will have extra eps (totaling 30! Wow), the extras will apparently be backstory for new characters coming in S2. And though I do not actually watch THE OFFICE, I still admire it from afar (probably cuz of the BSG fandom overlaps and shoutouts), so the news that this show also is getting extra eps (total of 29) is great. More eps! Yes!
Oh and: I'm sure you've all seen them now, but here are the Bionic Woman clips that feature Katee strung together for youtube viewing. I guess mainly it surprises me that anyone thinks this can work as a biz model.
metafandom is abuzz this week with discussions of what this means - who is going to use fanfic to drive their business? What does it mean to try to monetize the work of fans who are not getting paid for their services? Is there anything really wrong with this in the end, since fans will write it anyway? And...what about smut, porn and slash fic? *confused*

Date: 2007-05-17 02:42 pm (UTC)Firstly and don't shoot me - katee sucks in the Bionic Woman preview. Honestly - seeing her fight? Done that, give cheesy lines like 'you're going to have to do better than that' ... well maybe it's just that she's got bad material to work with. Perosnally? Can't stand David Eick. So I'm not excited about the Bionic Woman remake. Can't anyone think of anything new anymore? Am I doomed to rewatch all the stuff I watched as a kid, which I thought was cool then (though now it seems tacky) as a bad remake now? Granted BSG is great, but most remakes of movies/tv shows/songs? Suck bigtime. And just because Katee looks sexy in the rain and can fight like a man doesn't mean the show will be good. I'll watch the premiere but doubt I'll continue past that.
Honest opinion about Katee? Like her but I'm not a rabid fangirl the way a good chunk of my flist is. She's okay but she's not always fantastic.
""""I'm also loving David Eick today for saying this: "I'm working on a show that's all about what it means to be a strong woman in contemporary America, that happens to be called THE BIONIC WOMAN." Personally? I hate feminism. Yes, I'm female. I'm all for equality but most 'feminists' equate equality to' punching the hell out of guys because they did it for so many years keeping women under their thumb that now it's our turn.' Can't abide that. And watching women fight each other? Doesn't really turn me on. Maybe it does for the guys but not me.
Onto another subject. Apple TV - got it, had it for about a month. Great idea! Really like it - the only problem is it resyncs too often and wipes what you had set on it. Don't like that aspect. We've gotten around it by unplugging it when we add/subtract things from our computer. Don't ask - I'm not the tecchie one in the family, I just use it. Also there's no clock. WTF? A piece of technology with no clock? I don't get it. So yes, there are a few kinks that need to be worked out. Great idea though, especially for those of us who don't have cable but buy shows from iTunes. (which we shouldn't being that we're not from the USA but that's another story ...)

Date: 2007-05-19 02:12 pm (UTC)IDK, stardust, if I would define feminism that way. I tend towards a couple of quotes from his(her)story that are collected now at wikipedia:
feminism: n. Belief in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes. (The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition.)
Feminism is the radical notion that women are people. --Cheris Kramerae, author of A Feminist Dictionary, 1996 [though surely this dates to earlier than 1996?]
I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat, or a prostitute. --Rebecca West, 1913
(I especially like the 3rd one.)
I equate the growing number of diverse, strong women in positions of power in their societies on the TV, as TV with a Feminist Agenda. I also would note that I'm a bit tongue in cheek when I say this - since the Entertainment biz is still ANYTHING but feminist at its core. But little things - the fact that you rarely see any pilots on BSG wearing makeup...the way that Number Six looks so fragile when we know she could rip someone's head off if she chose...Roslin as President...the way Buffy Sommers can be fragile and confused one moment, then turn around and slay 10 demons in less than 60 seconds...watching Sydney Bristow (Alias) and her mother in that show, smart women who are top agents with no equal...I could go on and on. These things make an impression.
I don't share your dislike of Eick, or Sackhoff, obviously. But I hope you'll give BW a chance, maybe more than one episode? Eick is the one who chose Ron Moore to DO BSG IN THE FIRST PLACE - I hope you'll at least give him some credit for that.
RE Apple TV - yeah it sounds pretty lame. That's too bad. I'll stick to my bizarre but successful combination of DVR, DVD player/recorder, camcorder, SIMA converter, and freeware, thanks very much! (And yeah - NO CLOCK? Seriously?)

Date: 2007-05-19 02:22 pm (UTC)And as for my disliking Katee Sackhoff - I don't dislike her. I like her very much at times. She plays Starbuck fantastically well but I've seen her in other things and she's not that good in those. What I despise is people who automatically say 'she's amazing!' before they've even seen her in something (clips and previews really don't give you a good idea) just BECAUSE she's Katee. There are those who are just rabid Katee fans, same as Jamie Bamber fans who squee about everything they do just because of who they are. I personally think Jamie Bamber is one of the hottest actors around (looks-wise) but a good chunk of the BSG cast can outact him anyday.
As for the Apple tv - why ask for people's opinions when you've already made up your mind not to like it?

Date: 2007-05-19 02:49 pm (UTC)My hubby is a software developer for the Mac so he's right up on the whole Apple scene and usually knows what's happening before anyone does. And he got the Apple TV for testing purposes for one of his applications. We probably wouldn't have bought the beta version yet either if it weren't for that.
Thanks for the correction and sorry if I sound confrontational - I'm not meaning to be. About this or the other things. I've been feeling sh*tty the last couple of weeks - too many damn gastrointestinal viruses have found their way into my home (via the kids of course) and we've all been sick the better part of the month, so I'm feeling kind of crabby in general. I don't mean to insult you or your opinions - I'm just making my own known and hoping to get discussions going. I always like to talk about things and try to respect other people's opinions. I guess the Katee/Bionic Woman thing has got my back up because it seems every other entry on my friend's page is 'how great is the Bionic Woman going to be?' and 'katee is so fantastic in the Bionic Woman' and it just ticks me off that people think it'll be great without waiting to give it a chance. I know, I'm just as bad going the other way, but in all honesty I'll probably watch a few episodes, give it a chance, just like I did Drive (which did not deserve to be cancelled after just 3!). Drive sucked the first episode but got better over the next 2 and by the time it went off the air I was actually beginning to like it. Maybe BW will be the same way. And maybe Katee will be in more than just the premiere. Who knows eh?
My apologies for my previous posts. :)

Date: 2007-05-17 03:15 pm (UTC)I'm glad you're excited about BW. I am trying to not get my hopes up too high, even though I do like Eick and am interested in seeing his take on a strong woman outside of BSG.
You've given me lots to read! Thanks for making this day of the hellatus a little less crazy. :)

Date: 2007-05-19 12:23 pm (UTC)Unbelievable that news about Murdoch - but it's a great sign. If Murdoch thinks greening your business is good business, that's huge. One of the big roadblocks to making capitalism greener has been that (untrue) argument that cleaning up your biz, making it sustainable and efficient, is bad for business and hurts the economy. Finally the worm has turned on that lie.
As fo BW, I really liked the clips as is. A lot of folks seem to have issues with Michelle Ryan etc. IDK, she seems fine to me. I remember how tame I thought Jennifer Garner was at the start of Alias...we ought to at least watch the entire pilot before we all give final judgements! I just love the idea of Katee flitting back and forth between these two shows - goodgrrl on one, badgrrl on the other...too bad they won't be broadcast at the same time this fall.

Word. I popped over to the Fanlib site and I'm still confused on that point. I guess they make money from advertising revenue on the site? But still...bizarre. And now let's assume that it works as a business model: personally, I feel okay writing fic because RDM gave the all-clear, but I wouldn't want anyone to make money off of it -- unless it was the company which owns the rights to the show itself. Does that make any sense?
Also, I like the Bionic Woman previews with Katee but when I watch the clips with the woman who plays the lead--see, can't even remember her name--all I can think is "Katee is going to kick her ass...in several different ways." She's just not as good as our KS in the acting department, IMO. I can just see the BW show-runners saying "Wow, can we have more KS please?" I hope she can do both shows. Sniff. But if not, it will be great to see Katee getting more recognition.
Thanks for the links!

Date: 2007-05-19 01:52 pm (UTC)The Fanlib discussion has continued...and after thinking a bit more, I have posted some additional thoughts and links over here.
As often will happen when I dig into metafandom, more reading yesterday also led me to this very interesting blog by a (male) "Aca-Fan," Henry Jenkins, about fanboi vs fangirl cultures. Isn't the LJ a magical place of IDIC?

Date: 2007-05-17 04:15 pm (UTC)Can I just squee about some of those films? Stardust, Nanny Diaries, Sunshine, GOLDEN AGE!!! To name a few. Thanks for the links. Like I needed another excuse to see the Golden Age trailer yet a-frakkin-gain. :P

Date: 2007-05-19 01:55 pm (UTC)Yeah I figured you'd squee again on GOLDEN AGE - you're the one who first pointed that out to me in your own LJ. I have actually seen a rough cut of STARDUST, btw - while it is not nearly as great as the original Gaiman novel, it definitely has a very adult, darkly humorous tone that is unusual. Charlie Cox and Michelle Pfeiffer are great, and you have NEVER seen a pirate like DeNiro's pirate, I promise you!
Enjoy everything and thanks for commenting...

Date: 2007-05-17 04:35 pm (UTC)My brief thought on B&W previews is that it looked to me just like the typical network TV, of which I'm not a big fan.

Date: 2007-05-19 01:57 pm (UTC)Meanwhile, you are definitely not the only one who seems uninterested in BW, if all the commentary on youtube and nbc.com is any indication. But I think it looks great - and I just love the idea of Evil!Katee, she is camping it up in those clips and the fighting is BRUTAL and gorgeous. I hope all the naysayers will watch a few actual eps before making final judgement!

Re: apple tv
Date: 2007-06-04 01:08 am (UTC)Re: apple tv
Date: 2007-06-04 01:14 am (UTC)Combined with the fact they're already downloading movie previews, it means that soon once the lawyers get done, they'll be able to do OnDemand style programming over the internet, but as always, attorneys trump innovation.
Plus, if you are like me, and download via BT, Apple TV and FrontRow (on the macs themselves) don't play Xvid, Divx or other files without some retooling, and I'd just as soon be able to turn on a machine play whtever and be done.
I got a proto AppleTV 2 years ago, a TVisto, it's simply a hard drive with a remote and AV plugs on it, and it works pretty good, esp. since you don't have to turn on the computer to watch ripped DVDs, AVIs, MP4s and the like. Even plays music! and it was cheap, and better ones are out now......
