Oh yeah. I can fly.
May. 12th, 2008 06:03 pmI'm a tad behind on the movies in theaters front...but IRON MAN was really fun.
Did anyone see SPEED RACER? It's on my list.
Meanwhile, from the small(er) screen...I'm actually sorry I missed LaBuff on SNL, he was funny! I want an animated GIF icon of him as Doug Henning saying "Magic!" and flinging his hand like that. Hilarious.
Lots of GeekTV news coming in the next wave of TV upfront buzz this weekend and today, that JJ Abrams new show FRINGE has been picked up and will most likely run this fall. Whedon's DOLLHOUSE is a go for midseason. Apparently SARAH CONNOR's season 2 will run with FRINGE this fall? And Peter (FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS) Berg is going to direct Ron Moore/Michael Taylor's pilot for VIRTUALITY? W00t.
I am looking forward to this VHI series SEX: THE REVOLUTION. Per PopCandy, looks like Sundance Channel will show the uncensored versions next week.
The things I loved best -
- RDJ, OBVIOUSLY. I have watched Downey acting for most of my life, and this was icing on the cake really. He was also fantastic in last year's ZODIAC...if you haven't seen it yet: rent the Director's Cut DVD instead of the theatrical cut, if you can find it.
- Nobody mentions how fun Terence Howard is. I love that moment when he wants to put on Stark's other suit (the unpainted one) and says "awwww, NEXT TIME BAYBEE."
- I wasn't sure how much I could love a movie about a billionaire bachelor arms dealer. But this movie manages to strike a perfect balance: he's in the center of the military industrial complex, but he wants to quit and change the whole system. He's a bachelor longing for family and love (RDJ sells this big time). There's a wonderful, not-too-subtle, not-too-obvious fantasy underpinning here for our post-911, post-War-on-Terror times: who is the ideal anti-terror democratic warrior? A gold-titanium-alloy-encased, well informed, rich American vigilante? Right on. At least he has proper armor, unlike many US soldiers.
- The two beautifully done teases to the rest of the Marvel Universe peeking out of this film. Small but perfect. A new stage of viral/transmedia.
My only problem was Pepper Potts, his slave wench. Only in Hollywood's manly-man fantasy factory does this shit work, honeys.

Date: 2008-05-13 07:58 pm (UTC)I liked the nod to Warmachine from the film, with Rhodes comment; I want to see that Nick Fury film ASAP, though.
My showing of Iron Man had trailers for Happening and Doomsday, both of which I'd love to see given a chance.
