Jamie Bamber speaks...and makes me HAPPY
There have recently been dug up by my shipper pals, two reports of Jamie Bamber at the 2007 I-Con at Stony Brook. What follows are bits and pieces that make me...very very happy *squee*
Also some of it makes me all thoughtful and speculative. Hmm.
And...JB has written a spec treatment for a S4 ep that he's pitching to RDM? Holy frak.
This is all bits and pieces, jumbled together, of both Con reports...the full links are at bottom of post.
**************************************************************
He made a joke about the humans having an opportunity to exterminate the Cylons, but "that lily-livered Helo" screwed it all up. Heh. He does not think Lee saw the heavy raider in "Maelstrom." Hmm.
He thinks that in some ways Laura Roslin is just as bad as Gaius Baltar but there's a difference in perception. And that Lee truly believes that Gaius deserves a true trial and a true defense. And that he thinks this is a strong, good step for Lee's growth.
The one question I asked was to ask him to elaborate more about what kind of writing he's interested in, since he'd mentioned he'd been doing some scribbling. He's been experimenting with screenwriting, largely to see what he's capable of and to try new things, but he also has a pitch for a BSG episode that he's hoping to talk Ron and David into doing...he's been fooling around with this for a while, unbeknownst to the producers, and that means that, like Bradley Whitford before him, Jamie writes fanfic. Hee hee hee hee. (In the middle of his answer to me he even made a reference to fanfic writers, which was amusing.) sternel mentioned in her journal that at an earlier Q&A, he actually showed everyone the seven-page treatment he has that he wants to show Ron.
He talked about becoming more and more interested in speculative fiction lately. Someone asked whether he had any kind of science fiction-y background since he seems to have a lot of deep thoughts about the issues raised on the show, but Jamie said it's just that he's an academic sort, that his academic background makes him analyze that way. Talked about his degrees in French and Italian literature, said that he considered just studying English literature, but then figured that if he was going to study literature anyway, he might as well learn something new (French and Italian) while he was at it.
...Someone asked if he's read fanfic. He hasn't (SHOCK), but he spun it as being because he usually only likes to read things that he already knows are good. Like things on the NYT bestseller list. But he thinks it's really cool that people write it and want to spend more time with the characters. (What else is he gonna say?)
He mentioned that he and his wife are really tight with James Callis and his wife, and that their kids are good friends with Callis' kids. Awww. And that since Katee is younger and single she's kind of the free-spirited party girl in comparison. ;)
For the shippers, he made a comment about Lee and Kara being each other's halves. :) He also had an interesting observation that the only person that Kara seems to be able to have a straightforward relationship with is Bill Adama, that it's an outright paternal relationship that she doesn't run away from or shun, the way she does with her relationships with Lee and Sam.
During the Q&A, sternel asked him if he was frustrated that Lee didn't get to have a real emotional scene following Kara's death, and my fellow Lee lovers will be happy to know he said just what a bunch of us had been saying, that Lee doesn't feel he is allowed to grieve openly for Kara because he was not her husband, and that her husband has that right more than he does, and that not only can he not grieve openly, but that no one knows the full extent of his grief, and he can't tell anyone either, and it makes his grief all the more tragic. He mentioned that in the scene with Lee and Bill where Lee lashes out with "You have no idea," that there were a couple of takes where he actually cried a little, but he's glad they didn't go with one of those takes.
He did say that it's been frustrating to him that we haven't seen more of Lee's guilt, as Lee feels that he essentially sent Kara to her death. (Although, he said, at the same time, grounding her would have killed her as well, in a different way.) He hopes that thread gets picked up again. Someone pointed out that Lee sending Kara to her death was like Kara sending Zak to his. Jamie hadn't thought of that. Hey, that's why there are fans, to do that sort of thing for you. *g*
He was asked if he did any improv himself and he said that almost every scene has some element of improv to it, that's how they all work. He did specifically mention Lee and Kara's last scene, sitting by the Viper, he said that the framework was there but they improvved (I made up a word there) a lot of it. Interesting.
He said that just because Starbuck is gone doesn't mean her presence won't linger, and that in some ways Lee may take on some of her persona to compensate (telaryn, I thought of your observation about the lounging!).
**************************************************************
He said that they do know some things in advance but a lot of stuff they don't, i.e. no, the final group of Cylons were only recently told they were Cylons and this wasn't planned from day 1.
...we were asking various things about what makes the Cylons human. Jamie pointed out that Apollo is one of the characters who hates the Cylons the most and thinks they are "Human" the least, because when you think about it he never really interacts with Cylon characters that much (Adama had Sharon as did Helo, Roslin interacts with Cylons what with the Hera thing, Starbuck has the Leoben thing, but otherwise, YEAH Apollo would logically be all for killing off the Cylons with the virus attack.
My mom then asked in no uncertain terms quote "What is Gaeta's sexuality?" (greatly embarrasing me) at which point Jamie proudly declared that nothing official has been said, but personally, "He's a flaming queen".
Fun facts: in the original script for "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II" literally the only difference about Apollo "One Year Later" was that he was wearing glasses like his father. So they're reading through the script and Michael Rymer says "hey, why not make Apollo really fat" and Jamie said "That's a great idea!"...and then ran to Ron to champion it. So the idea wasn't specificlaly Jamie's, Michael Rymer suggested it, but then Jamie really liked the idea and went to Ron and pushed him to do it.
Apollo/Dualla is DEAAAD! (Sorry, I'm just excited again) someone asked and Jamie said that when Dualla walked out on Apollo in "Crossroads, Part I" Kandyse McClure asked "Is Apollo/Dualla really over for good" and Ron Moore clearly said "yes, for good. It's over".
I asked Jamie if Apollo ever found the ring he lost in the scene in "Taking a Break" when he falls apart, but he didn't really have a clear answer other than to say that he's still wearing his real life wedding ring in late season 3 (so I would assume that means he must have found his "in-show" ring off-screen.
Jamie brought out his backpack, and waved a pack of 7 papers stapled together at us (I was 15 feet away so I couldn't read them or anything but it was 7 or so full pages of type)
....and Jamie Bamber said this was a spec script that he had written for Season 4, titled "Terra Finis", which he was going to show to the writers that week and he hopes they'll use it
