proggrrl: (BW we'll have to fix that!)

Wednesday nights are going to burn holes in my DVR.  All the shows I watched this evening, including PRIVATE PRACTICE, deserve a bit more of my time.  A few of them are definitely going to drop off later in the season, just not sure yet which ones.  Next week PUSHING DAISIES starts up too, adding more to the frey.

BIONIC WOMAN -  I liked it.

I don't agree with most of the harshest negative press. There were weak points in the writing, and hey they don't have Michael Rymer or Kevin Smith setting the visual tone/etc...but it's a strong idea, an AWESOME cast (Ryan included!), and has a wonderfully dark, comic-novel feel. This is a show worth giving another month or two of time to find its "sea legs" and let The Jason Katims Effect sink in.

The comparisons to LA FEMME NIKITA and ALIAS are spot-on…the addition of robotics and nanotech to the equation cranks everything up a notch or two.  And why doesn't anyone seem to love Miguel "ROBOCOP" Ferrer as much as me?  Or talk about how the other cast besides Katee are pretty good?  (Ferrer, Isaiah Washington, and Mark Sheppard, all on the same show? *glee*)

Katee Sackhoff deserves every kudo she's getting, natch. It's a delicious, layered villain and the richest, chewiest part in the pilot (Mark Sheppard's could also turn out to be pretty yummy, we'll see).

A lot of folks seem to be reacting badly to Ryan's wide-eyed, innocent-girl act here. For me it seems utterly appropriate - she's a low key young woman suddenly thrust into a very masculine, dog-eat-dog world of spies, special ops, hi-tech and superwoman powers. Her reactions and expressions seem completely appropriate. (And Ryan's American accent is pretty darned fine.)

I particularly like the way Ryan is portraying Jamie's lack of physical confidence in her new powers. It's utterly appropriate that Corvus moves and fights like a well-trained expert, and Sommers like a clueless n00b with sub-conscious fight software slowly kicking in (great concept!). And we can see from the available 1.2 and 1.3 photos, that her training is about to begin.  I'm in! Fun stuff.

PRIVATE PRACTICE – OK, obviously, this show isn’t blowing me away the way the first few GREY’S eps did.  But I insist that if you enjoy GREY’S you will probably like this show – this is pure Shonda…minus the angsty joy of Meredith/McDreamy.  There’s a lot of negative buzz about the show, but I’m here to say I enjoyed the spring pilot, and this first real episode touched me.  I was actually moved to tears by the end of the shopping-mall 911 scene, when Violet and Cooper talk through her patient’s file and reveal how the child died.  Very sweet and heartbreaking.  This show (and heck possibly even GREY’S) may go overboard later this fall, but for now I’m giving it a chance.

DIRTY SEXY MONEY -  So far so good.  Heck, I was IN just watching Donald Sutherland and Peter Krause’s first scene together.  But it’s snarky fun, and the one worry I had (that it would glorify more boring rich folks) looks to be solved handily by the murder mystery.  We’ll see.  For now it is a sharp, funny, shiny pretty thing.

Meanwhile, stalwart UGLY BETTY was like, totally satisfying.  You either love this show or hate it, really.  I find it hilarious, soapy, campy, delightful.  Putting Amanda in the fatsuit is genius.  The Telenovela open was hilarious.  Having Alex forget she’s Alexis is more genius.  Really, I could just go on and on about it, but I’ll stop now.  *glee*

I am still hanging on to GREY’S ANATOMY, at least for now.  Our Beloved Interns are now residents, which has introduced a whole new adorable level of things, with their little intern ducklings following them around the ER all day.  We’ll see – I still may fling this show overboard if too many of the new shinies keep catching my eye.   For the record, I do NOT find Gizzie annoying, and I am soooo looking forward to George getting out of that stupid marriage.  And Sandra Oh continues to be enough of a reason to watch.
